kindness

Happy World Kindness Day!

Brian’s therapist and my good friend Maria asked me yesterday: what is the mission of my blog?
Having a clear objective is always a good thing. It keeps me focused and streamlines my thoughts. My response….kindness. I’m attempting, with the help of my kids, to spread kindness and acceptance for the special needs community and at the same time reach younger moms who are struggling with their new and overwhelming challenges.

This is not to say that I haven’t had my bad moments and have been guilty of not spreading kindness at times. I’ve seen a lot and felt many, many emotions during my 2 decades as an autism mom. Too many emotions for my little brain to handle in fact and sometimes those emotions have spilled out…..in the wrong places unfortunately. Not proud of that but it’s true. I guess that’s called being human. Some of us run on more emotions than others and I’m definitely more on the emotional side. I’ve seen a lot of good over the years but in the spirit of keeping it real….a lot of bad too. Bad can actually be helpful at times, it is what inspires me to take action.

Years ago when we allowed cameras into our home resulting in the documentary The Family Next Door kindness was our family’s mission as well. We hoped the film would generate empathy and
result in greater acceptance for  kids with extreme social challenges.  I have stayed committed to that premise which is why my blog was born. If even a few people learn something causing them to reach out to others then I’m gratified.

Recently, Brian and I have latched on to the logo #bethekindkid. A T-shirt with this logo was created in the Avonworth School District in their Primary Center under the direction of a very special teacher Maureen Frew. It seems our sweet Brian is inspiring his friends to wear a t-shirt too just like we were inspired by the kids at Avonworth and that is a really great thing! Hey, if kids are asking to wear a t-shirt that says #bethekindkid than something  good is happening. Life is one big circle. One kind act can inspire another and another and another. We are all working, at least I hope we are, on teaching our kids to be kind to others. We all can use a visual reminder in our daily life. Today is World Kindness Day and the perfect day to share some photos of kids doing their part to spread this beautiful message.

Thank you  to those who have encouraged me to keep writing these past 6 months! Whether you have an email subscription or following on FB I really appreciate you! Please keep sharing! Happy World Kindness day to all……I hope you felt the love.
